The Diversity and Inclusion Department plays a crucial role in preparing   future educators by providing them with cutting edge inclusive pedagogical skills and knowledge on managing classes with diverse learners. This department serves as the backbone of teacher development, ensuring that educators develop a deep understanding of the inclusive principles that guide teaching and learning benchmarked on international best practices.

The cluster has one college wide module, seven core modules and four specialisation modules.

Year 1 Semester 1 Modules

Inclusive Monitoring And Assessment Models

This module enables students to detect the diseases and disorders of the ear.  Students will be exposed to the anatomy and physiology of the ear. It further enables students generate educative materials on various diseases.

This module will enable students to conceptualize, examine, analyze, evaluate and discuss causes, perspectives and theories of intellectual disabilities. Students will produce educational materials and design intervention programmes for learners with learning disabilities.

This module focuses on the fundamentals of ophthalmology. It familiarises the with the anatomy and the physiology of the eye. The student will be further exposed to the aetiology of visual impairment, the management and prevention of visual impairment. The module empowers the student to provide innovative goods and services to individuals with visual impairment.

This module introduces you to important aspects in the area of learning disabilities. It enables you to have a better understanding of issues on the definition, historical perspectives and aetiology of learning disabilities. It is hoped that you will also get to appreciate the life span approach to understanding learning disabilities and trace the historical background and conceptual overview of learning disabilities from a social constructivist perspective within the confinement of Education 5.0 philosophy.

This module introduces the student to Zimbabwe Sign Language. The module further enables the student to understand the iconicity and arbitrariness of Sign Language. The module fosters in students the ability to communicate in Sign Language. Upon completion, the student should be able to communicate with Deaf people in Sign Language as well as offer interpreter services in the community

This module introduces the student to Braille as a system for reading and writing for people with blindness. The module further enables the students to acquire brailling and transcription skills in Grades 1-2 braille systems.It further equips the students with skills and mechanics in the teaching of braille to learners with blindness.

This module explores the principles and practices of assessment on learners with intellectual disabilities. It further identifies assessment tools, approaches and strategies that measure progress, information to support learners with intellectual disabilities. The module empowers student teachers to embrace problem solving and critical thinking skills in their identification, diagnosis and management of learners with intellectual disabilities.

This module exposes students to learning disabilities and their assessment. It further explores tools to measure education attainment and progress, information on which student teachers can base decisions about their future action and evidence regarding the effectiveness of programs availed to learners with learning disabilities. The module further empowers student teachers to embrace problem solving and critical thinking skills in their diagnosis, identification and management of learning disabilities. The module embraces the Education 5.0 philosophy.

This module exposes students to assistive technologies for learners with different impairments. The module is meant to engage student teachers in the design and construction of prototypes of assistive devices for individuals with different impairments. It intends to ensure that student teachers apply knowledge and skills in the construction and management of various assistive technologies. The module further empowers student teachers to embrace problem solving, and critical thinking skills in their inclusive educative processes that are within international best practices.

Year 1 Semester 2 Modules

DEPS 10121 Inclusive Monitoring And Assessment Models

This module exposes you to inclusive monitoring and assessment models in inclusive education. It further enables you to develop policy models that promote inclusivity. The module further aims to ensure all individuals, regardless of their background, abilities and identities are accurately represented and supported.

This module exposes the students to inclusive pedagogical approaches and universal designs for learners with disabilities. It further exposes students to different teaching and learning approaches using the universal designs and learning principles. The module promotes in students the ability to design prototypes that enable learners to access the curriculum.

The module is meant to engage student teachers in the various principles and practices of diverse and inclusive education. It intends to ensure that student teachers appreciate and apply global principles in transformative teaching and learning processes. The module further empowers student teachers to embrace problem solving, and critical thinking skills in their inclusive educative processes that are within international best practices.

Yaer 3 semester 1

Philosophical, Sociological And Psychological Issues In Disability

This module exposes you to inclusive monitoring and assessment models in inclusive education. It further enables you to develop policy models that promote inclusivity. The module further aims to ensure all individuals, regardless of their background, abilities and identities are accurately represented and supported.

This module will cover the definitions, perspectives and theories of Gifted and Talented Education. It will present to the student teacher the educational considerations, assessment, identification and educational policies and provisions that have been availed for learners who are gifted and talented. The module seeks to empower the student teachers to be equipped with skills to teach the gifted and talented learners so that they can produce goods and services required to address societal needs. The module attempts to make the student teacher to be aware of the presence of gifted and talented learners in the school setting and consequently be able to manage them in a classroom situation.

The module is designed to help students familiarize themselves with health related conditions as they affect educational outcomes. The students would be aware of psycho-social issues that affect learners with health related disabilities or diseases. The module shall cover definitions, causes, characteristics, theoretical frameworks and intervention strategies related to specific health related impairments or conditions. Identification, assessment, educational intervention procedures as well as psycho-social management issues for such learners shall also be discussed.

Level 3 semester 2

Physical Disabilities

This module exposes students to introduction and understanding of physical disabilities. The module is meant to engage student teachers in the various forms of physical disabilities. It intends to ensure that student teachers cherish the various forms of physical disabilities. The module further empowers student teachers to be aware and develop the knowledge of managing them in inclusive educational settings.

This module will cover the definitions, perspectives and theories of Gifted and Talented Education. It will present to the student teacher the educational considerations, assessment, identification and educational policies and provisions that have been availed for learners who are gifted and talented. The module seeks to empower the student teachers to be equipped with skills to teach the gifted and talented learners so that they can produce goods and services required to address societal needs.
