Culture, Languages and Social Sciences

Our department is dedicated to providing high-quality education to prospective teachers in the areas of culture, languages and social sciences. We strive to foster a culture of excellence, creativity and critical thinking, and to promote a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between culture, language and society. The Department is made up of two clusters as follows:

 

CULTURE, LANGUAGES AND COMMUNICATION CLUSTER

The Culture, Languages and Communication Cluster is one of the vibrant clusters at United College of Education. The cluster is dedicated to providing high quality education in the areas of culture, languages and communication. The cluster offers five languages as follows:

  1. Indigenous Languages
  2. ChiShona
  3. ChiTonga
  4. IsiNdebele
  5. TjiKalanga

N.B Plans are underway to introduce Xhosa as the fifth indigenous language

  1. B. Foreign Languages

     English

 N.B. Sign Language is also one of the languages offered by the college but it is housed in the Diversity and Inclusive Education Department.

Social Sciences Cluster

Our cluster is dedicated to providing high quality education in social sciences to prospective primary school teachers. We strive to foster a culture of critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, social justice, global citizenship and collaboration.

Our Team

Our department is comprised of experienced and dedicated lecturers who are passionate about teaching and research and is structured as follows:

  • Head of Department
  • Lecturer- In- Charge: Culture, Languages and Communication
  • Lecturer-In-Charge: Social Sciences
  • Area Coordinators in the various areas offered in the department

The Languages, Culture and   Communication Cluster comprises a diverse team of 16 members while the Social Sciences Cluster is manned by a dynamic team of 13 members.

Core Modules - Level 1: Semester 1

Human Rights safeguarding and support systems

This module will explore the fundamental principles of Human Rights, safeguarding, and support systems in the context of education. It will examine the key concepts, frameworks and tools for promoting and protecting Human Rights.

Core Modules - Level 1: Semester 2

Inclusive Pedagogy in Social Sciences and Materials Development

The module is meant to assist the students to appreciate the diversity in the environment. In the process, the module will promote equity and a sense of belonging for all. The students will produce images and materials that reflect diverse cultures, races and abilities.

College Wide Modules

College-Wide modules refer to a set of modules that are taken by all students across the entire college. Some of our college-wide modules were developed by clusters across college departments. The Social Sciences Cluster offers the following college-wide clusters:

Level 2 : Semester 1

Citizenry for National Development

This module is meant to equip students with knowledge of citizenship rights and responsibilities that will enable them to participate in national development programmes in Zimbabwe.

Level 2 : Semester 2

Life skills and entrepreneurship

The module seeks to help students understand entrepreneurship and to set up income generating projects. It will also equip students with essential life skills and entrepreneurial mind set to succeed in personal and professional life.
